Some chippy play and words exchanged on the diamond have several members of the Diamond Heels benched.
UNC announced Thursday that "multiple student-athletes" on the baseball team would serve one-game suspensions over the next five games "as a result of an incident that occurred at the end of the seventh inning of our game vs. Gardner-Webb on Tuesday."
The suspensions were handed down by the NCAA.
The university did not identify the specific players affected or say when the suspensions might be served.
The Tar Heels (31-17, 12-11 ACC) defeated NC State 9-8 in the series opener Thursday in Chapel Hill. NC State led 5-0 in the first inning.
The teams meet Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m., the final home game of the 2023 regular season for UNC. Both games are sold out.
The ACC Baseball Championships are May 23-28 at Durham Bulls Athletic Park in Durham. The top 12 teams the regular season qualify for the championship event.
NC State is 31-16, 10-14 in the ACC.
